Automatic Vehicle Location System

Tracker receives data from Metro's Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system. AVL technology is installed on each Metro bus to help Metro track buses in order to monitor and optimize system performance as well as improve security.

The AVL system includes:

  1. computers and the radio system on-board each bus
  2. signpost transmitters distributed throughout King County that broadcast a location signal to a bus
  3. displays in Service Communications
  4. servers that process the data stream and determine the location of each bus

The location information is relayed from Metro's Service Communications to Tracker's computers where it is processed for display over the Internet.
