growin' up

When it's me and grandma on the bus, i sit close
feel the softness beneath her thick coat
she lets me pull the cord when it's time to get off, says i'm growin' up
it feel good when the big bus stop just 'cuz I ask it
i look the driver in the eye, tell him, "thank you, sir"
he winks back at me, "you welcome ma'am"
i feel my cheeks/chest fill with pride
yeah...i'm a big girl now

Tracie D. Hall's first memories of the bus are of having to stand on her grandmother's lap to ring the bell. She's been riding ever since.
