Dryer Number Three

A dryer is running in the basement of my apartment.
Always running, always in use-Dryer Number Three
Filling space with the sweet linty scent of delicate knits
It was running as my apartment was built around it
It will be running still when the building comes down
Whatever is to follow after we are dustballs and rust
Whoever inherits this warm moist rotating sphere
Tumbles delicately a chrysalis in Dryer Number Three.

Gregory Hischak lives in Seattle, generally takes the No. 10 bus, sometimes walks.
