Dawn Arrives In a Small Town
Sunlight breaking,
the ripple of water,
ache of cool flesh bursting into goose pimples
beneath white sheets.
Chickens on the front lawn,
laundry floating out back,
ghostly howl of a mourning dove.
Now the dust rises,
now small feet shuffle across the road,
someone guns an engine
the hungry rrr, rrr, rrr of teenage drag racers
late for homeroom.
Fried eggs crackle, toast burns,
morning comes home, late from a date.
