Lost

Lost

Stapled to telephone poles
Flapping in the wind,
Splotched with rain
They earn half a glance
From the man
Who drums his fingers on the dashboard
Waiting for a flicker of green
The letters are bold
Accompanied with photos
of smiling dogs or cats
dogs with their tongue out,
tail wagging
You wait by the phone
Heart beating faster, hoping
Until one day you hear
the familiar bark
And feel the tongue
licking your face.
