Our Lady of the Barn
The oldest, thinnest barn cats would trail my mother to our mailbox, mewing out sins and sorrows—Rats and birds they caught, tomcats they had known, kittens deceived by the warmth under cows. Even the wildest cats accepted her absolving scritch before disappearing into timothy and thistle.

Our Lady of the Barn

The oldest, thinnest barn cats would trail my mother
to our mailbox, mewing out sins and sorrows—

Rats and birds they caught, tomcats they had known,
kittens deceived by the warmth under cows.

Even the wildest cats accepted her absolving scritch
before disappearing into timothy and thistle.

Leslie Basel
