Sharm el Sheik and Carpi
The mountains were sudden, sharp edged, a slicing reality I'd missed in the dreamy haze of the Po's flatlands. The sands were red-brown, the sky a hard, dusty blue. I'd dreamed of ancient pyramids, and finding only new buildings turned my thoughts back to red poppies in green wheat.

Sharm el Sheik and Carpi

The mountains were sudden,
sharp edged,
a slicing reality I’d missed
in the dreamy haze
of the Po’s flatlands.

The sands were red-brown,
the sky a hard, dusty blue.
I’d dreamed of ancient pyramids,
and finding only new buildings
turned my thoughts back
to red poppies in green wheat.

Molly Blair
