To Be Without

In the papery husk,
through the dormant weeks, suspended—
shifting with the limb, the scratching wind,

and the green, delirious division within;
as if one could sleep and in the sleeping grow
another face,

and then, tearing back the cast, expose
the unmistakable wing.
