Regional Transfer

If you board Metro Transit and pay your fare using cash or Metro tickets or pay a cash upgrade (when taking a trip that exceeds the value of your pass), you can request a transfer slip from your driver when you pay your fare. Your transfer slip is valid for between one hour and thirty minutes (1:30) and one hour and fifty-nine minutes (1:59) and will show the time it expires. Your valid transfer will be accepted on Community Transit or Pierce Transit for a local base fare or on Sound Transit for a one-zone fare, regardless of how many zones you paid for on Metro Transit. Depending on when and where you travel on those systems, an additional fare might be required.

No transfers are issued without cash or Metro ticket fare payment. If you pay your fare with a Metro-only pass (Regional Reduced Fare Permit with a monthly or annual reduced fare sticker, Access Pass, visitor pass or vanpool/transit pass), you must either:

  • pay the Metro base fare in effect with cash or Metro tickets in order to be issued a transfer slip, or
  • you must pay the appropriate cash fare on the transit system to which you are transferring.

A valid transfer from Community Transit, Pierce Transit, or Sound Transit can be used as payment for a one zone fare on Metro Transit, regardless of how much you paid on the other system. If you are an adult and want to travel two zones during the peak period, an additional fifty cents ($0.50) will be required.
