Special Service Info

Metro Fare Collection Info

Fare collection procedures are intended to expedite loading and unloading of riders to/from buses while on the ferry docks:

On-Island Travel

If you are riding on Vashon Island, only, pay a one-zone fare as you board the bus when heading toward the ferry dock, or as you exit when heading away from the ferry dock.

Cross Sound Travel To Seattle

  • If you drive, bike or walk to the Vashon ferry dock, walk on the ferry (see Ferry Toll Collection, below), board a Route 116, 118 or 119 on the Seattle side and pay a one-zone fare when you exit the bus. (If you board any other route to downtown after getting off the ferry, pay when you board the bus.)
  • If you ride the bus on the island to the ferry dock, either as a direct trip between the island and Seattle or as a shuttle just to the Vashon ferry dock, swipe your two-zone pass through the farebox pass reader or pay a two-zone cash fare when you board the bus. The driver will give you a transfer as a receipt when you pay cash fare. When you exit your bus in Seattle, swipe your pass again, or show your transfer to indicate previous payment of a cash fare.
  • If your trip does not originate on Vashon Island, but you board a 116, 118 or 119 bus in West Seattle, pay a one-zone fare as you exit the bus.

Cross Sound Travel To Vashon

All passengers, except as noted below, will be required to exit the bus upon arrival at the end of the ferry dock and pay the ferry cash fare or have their ferry fare media scanned at the passenger terminal.

  • If your trip is from downtown to Vashon Island, swipe your two-zone pass through the farebox pass reader or pay a two-zone cash fare when you board the bus. The driver will give you a transfer as a receipt if you pay cash fare.
  • Passengers who have a valid Ship-to-Shore PugetPass (good for both bus and ferry fare), and any disabled passengers, will not be required to exit the bus. Passengers who have paid in cash upon boarding the bus (exact bus fare and ferry fare together) may also stay on the coach at the ferry terminal.
  • All Puget Pass holders, those who paid the full cash fare, and any disabled passengers must have their pass, transfer, or fare ready to show a Washington State Ferries employee, who will visually check the Puget Passes and scan any disabled passenger's fare media using a portable scanning device.
  • Passengers who have exited the bus will be allowed to re-board when the bus is on the boat and after cars have boarded the ferry.
  • Bus passengers who are starting their trip at the ferry will pay their ferry fare, walk onto the boat and board the bus. Those passengers will pay their bus fare when they exit the bus on Vashon.
  • If your trip is from downtown to West Seattle, only, pay a one-zone fare when you board the bus.

Ferry Toll Collection

Metro-Washington State Ferry Joint Pass Holder

Your pass is valid for ferry tolls and is paid on the bus on direct trips between Vashon Island and Seattle. Just show your pass to the driver.

Metro Pass Holders

Your pass is not valid for ferry tolls. Washington Sate Ferry tickets or cash must be used, and payment is made on the bus on direct trips. If using ferry tickets, present them to the bus driver, or deposit cash in the farebox. Request a transfer - the bus driver will punch it to show you've paid your ferry fare. If you do not pay your ferry fare on the bus, you will exit the bus at the ferry terminal to pay it and re-board the bus on the ferry.

Customers Paying Cash Fares

You pay your bus fare when you board the bus, as above. You may also pay your ferry fare in cash or Washington State Ferry tickets at the same time. Request a transfer - the bus driver will punch it to show you've paid your ferry fare. If you don't pay your ferry fare on the bus, you'll exit the bus at the ferry terminal to pay it and re-board the bus on the ferry.

Walk-On Ferry Passengers

A round-trip ferry toll is collected (Washington State Ferry tickets or cash) at the Fauntleroy ferry dock when headed toward Vashon Island, only.
