Description |
Metro VanPool provides an 8, 12 or 15-passenger van group of 5 to 15 people. Costs include: rider support services, insurance, van maintenance, fuel, tires and training. It is much cheaper than driving alone. The monthly fares are based on the number of people in the van and the commute round-trip mileage. Many employers subsidize the fare.
- Anyone can join a commuter vanpool as a rider.
- For a new VanPool you'll need 4 other people, in addition to yourself – or as many as 15 – to organize a vanpool.
- A Metro-approved primary driver, at least one backup driver and a bookkeeper. Volunteer drivers need to be at least 21 years old with a current Washington State driver’s license and a good driving record for the past three years. Because vanpool bookkeepers collect fares, this person must have a good credit history. Anyone in the group, including drivers, can be your bookkeeper.

Steps to forming a VanPool:
- Once your pool is together: decide on a route, pick-points and schedule.
- Select a driver and bookkeeper. The driver may ride free and will receive 40 free personal miles monthly. More miles are available for a small charge.
- Complete the driver and bookkeeper applications and rider agreements. Once your pool is approved, drivers and bookkeeper will attend a half-day orientation class and take the van home.
VanPool starter kits are available to interested customers.
