New bus tunnel access opens at Benaroya Hall

Benaroya Hall tunnel entrance

There's a new entryway to the downtown Seattle transit tunnel in Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony. It's from Second and Third avenues to the tunnel's University Street Station.

Entry to the station from Second Avenue has been closed since June 1996 during Benaroya Hall construction. The new concert hall also provides new elevator access to the tunnel from Third Avenue, improving tunnel accessibility for people with disabilities.

Metro wins national award for 'JobSeekers' program

Metro Transit has won the 1998 Jobs Creation Award from the American Public Transit Association, a national trade association of agencies and authorities that provide public transportation across the country.

The award recognizes Metro's JobSeekers Transportation Program, a welfare-to-work program that is a key part of the King County Jobs Initiative.

The program connects low-income workers with the means of getting to potential jobs by improving access to transportation information, providing routes that better connect low-income populations to job centers, offering subsidized transit passes for job seekers and working with employers to develop customized transportation options for their workers.

Federal Transit Administration honors Metro school program

The Federal Transit Administration has honored Metro Transit's Education Services Program with a special award.

The award was presented at a state transportation conference in August for "outstanding efforts promoting and implementing youth transit safety throughout the Metro Transit service area."

Since its beginning in 1981, Metro's school program has reached more than a quarter of a million students with messages about the fun and responsibility involved in riding public transportation. Program goals include helping young people develop positive attitudes toward public transit and gain ownership and pride in transit services and facilities. The program teaches students about safe and appropriate behavior on the bus and makes them aware of the places they can get to in King County on Metro.
