An Australian Accent
Three 1928 Australian streetcars began service along Elliott Bay, from Pier 70 to Main Street, in May 1982. The streetcars were brought from Melbourne, Australia, thanks to the enthusiasm of former Seattle City Councilmember George Benson, a long-time supporter of public transportation. One more streetcar joined the fleet in June 1990 to help provide service beyond the waterfront into the International District, and a fifth car was added to the fleet in 1993.
Tasmanian mahogany and white ash woodwork capture the elegance of travel in a bygone era. The streetcars can accommodate 43 seated passengers and 50 standing riders. Streetcars and stations are fully accessible for disabled riders.
