Changes proposed for Kent East Hill commuter bus service
King County Metro Transit wants to hear what you think about options for changing commuter bus service during weekday peak hours between Kent East Hill and downtown Seattle. Metro proposes to operate a new bus route, Route 157, between Lake Meridian Park-and-Ride, Kent East Hill, and downtown Seattle via SE 208th Street, SE 212th Street, Orillia Road, and Interstate 5.

New Route 157
New Route 157 is being proposed to provide more trips and a faster connection for riders from Kent East Hill to downtown Seattle. It would provide three northbound trips in the morning peak hours and three southbound trips in the afternoon peak hours. One of two proposed options for this service would also modify existing Route 161. If approved by the King County Council, this change would be made in September 2008.
Two options for new Route 157
Option 1: New Route 157 would travel between Lake Meridian Park-and-Ride and SE 208th Street via Kent Kangley Road and 116th Avenue SE. No changes would be made to Route 161. See Option 1 map.
Advantages
- New direct connection to downtown Seattle from Lake Meridian Park-and-Ride, Kent Kangley Road, and 116th Avenue SE.
- New service for parts of 116th Avenue SE that currently do not have bus service. No change for riders of existing Route 161.
Disadvantages
- Riders along 108th Avenue SE and 104th Avenue SE south of SE 208th Street would continue to have indirect trips to downtown because of the current one-way routing of Route 161.
Option 2: New Route 157 would travel between Lake Meridian Park-and-Ride and SE 208th Street via Kent Kangley Road, 116th Avenue SE, SE 223rd Street, and 124th Avenue SE. The East Hill routing of Route 161 would be modified to begin on SE 248th Street and travel via SE 248th Street, 104th Avenue SE, and 108th Avenue SE. See Option 2 map.
Advantages:
- New Route 157 would provide faster service for Glencarin riders than they now receive from existing Route 161.
- Revised Route 161 would provide faster service to downtown Seattle from portions of 104th Avenue SE and 108th Avenue SE south of SE 208th Street compared to existing Route 161.
Disadvantages:
- Would require some existing riders of Route 161 to switch to new Route 157.
- Glencarin would be served with three trips on new Route 157 compared to five trips on existing Route 161.
- No new service would be provided along 116th Avenue SE between SE 223rd Street and SE 208th Street.
Metro would pay for the proposed new service with funds generated by Transit Now, an initiative approved by voters in November 2006.
The Transit Now ballot measure increased the sales tax by one-tenth of one percent to pay for a 15-20 percent expansion of Metro Transit service over 10 years. Learn more about Transit Now.
